Interesting Facts about Muiderslot Castle
Constructed in 1285, Muiderslot is one of the oldest and best-preserved castles in the Netherlands.
The castle was originally built to enforce a toll on the traders using the important Vecht river.
The original castle was destroyed in 1296 after Count Floris V, who built it, was murdered on-site.
It was rebuilt in the 14th century and largely retained its medieval structure, with thick brick walls over 1.5 meters thick.
The castle's main purpose was defense, featuring a moat, a drawbridge, and slots above the gate to surprise attackers with hot oil and stones.
Muiderslot was home to poet and writer P.C. Hooft for 38 years, who created a salon society known as the Muiderkring.
The gardens were designed under Hooft's direction in the 17th century, including a plum orchard.
The castle's herb garden contained plants used for cooking, medicine, and dyeing wool in the 17th century.
The Western tower leans noticeably and has a clockwise spiral staircase, a medieval defense feature that gave an advantage to right-handed defenders.
The castle's oval-shaped Southern tower has no staircase of its own, forcing attackers to go through the other towers to reach it.
In the Middle Ages, the castle was used to administer justice and contained instruments of torture like thumbscrews and a rack.
The castle features a "Vergeetkerker," or oubliette, a pitch-black dungeon only accessible through a hatch in the ground.
At the end of the 18th century, Muiderslot was abandoned and almost demolished but was saved by King William I.
Since 1878, Muiderslot has been a national museum and was thoroughly renovated by architect Pierre Cuypers, known for the Rijksmuseum.
